Forecast for Capricorn (December 21, 2008 to January 19, 2009)

On December 5, Sun and Mars joined forces as they edged their way towards the Saturn-Uranus opposition. In Athens, the police shooting of a teenager ignited unrest and was fuelled further by government scandals. We’ve witnessed the resulting riots and violence, with angry rebels (Uranus) clashing with police (Saturn) night after night. Sun and Mars continue to spark each other off until the end of the year, only now they are up against powerful Pluto. We may see more drama being enacted on the world stage, but it’s important that we learn to detach from our own involvement in drama. Focus on your life’s purpose rather than on other people’s issues. As you focus on the positive, you bring about a positive resolution.

December 21, 2008: The Sun moves into Capricorn (12.04 GMT) and we have the winter solstice (the shortest day of the year) in the Northern hemisphere and the summer solstice (the longest day of the year) in the Southern hemisphere. It’s a powerful turning point, a time of letting go of the old and making room for the new. Many cultures recognise this turning point of the Sun as a rebirth, involving celebrations, holidays and gatherings. Capricorn values tradition and family. We may be more sombre than usual, as the Sun is heading toward its annual meeting with Pluto.

December 22, 2008: No sooner has the Sun moved into Capricorn than it bumps up against Pluto (09.20 GMT). Struggles for power and supremacy or conflicts with authority figures are possible manifestations. Intense emotions may be sparked off. If you want clarity on some matter, aim to get to the core of the problem. This is not the time for superficial thinking and you may need to slow down your pre-Christmas speed to go down into the depths.

December 27, 2008: Today we have a Capricorn New Moon (12.23 GMT). Mars and Pluto combine with this New Moon, and make for a sense of urgency and a somewhat explosive combination. This is not a good time for a showdown, so back away from direct confrontation if you can. Capricorn is the hieroglyph of the goat. There are two types of goat – the domesticated animal (which is not free to roam) and the mountain goat (which is free to leap from crag to crag and climb ever higher in his search for what is good). Allow yourself to feel a burst of new energy for material creation. Capricorns are ambitious and good at setting long-term goals and planning. So stretch yourself and reach for that goal that you’ve been thinking about. Believe that whatever obstacles appear, you’ll be able to overcome them and manifest your dreams.

December 28, 2008: Following close on the heels of the New Moon, we have Mars bumping up against Pluto (19.57 GMT). Mars has to do with asserting oneself, expressing anger and aggression. Pluto charges everything with deep emotions. This can result in frustration because the anger can’t get out, and there’s a tendency for it to bottle up and then explode. When you feel powerful emotions, it’s a good idea to get it out of your system in a way that is safe for yourself and others. Aim to channel this intensity in a constructive way that gives it a physical outlet, perhaps by going jogging or swimming or taking part in some competitive sport.

December 31, 2008: Saturn is stationing right at the turn of the year (17.04 GMT) before going backwards for 4 months. During its retrograde period, Saturn retraces its steps to where it was around the end of September 2008. You may have made an important commitment to yourself at that time, set something in motion and worked hard to achieve the first part of that goal. It’s time to look back and see how far you’ve come and assess what the next step is. You may need to slow down, have patience with yourself and the process, keep the faith and not give up, because there may be obstacles, or the final outcome of this project may be delayed until the beginning of May, when Saturn changes direction once more.

January 5, 2009 – January 19, 2010: Jupiter enters Aquarius (15.42 GMT), where it will stay for the year to come. Aquarians may want to cheer! Jupiter is associated with the search for meaning and purpose, sowing the seeds of new ideas, bringing enlightenment, and providing new opportunities for growth and expansion.

January 11, 2009: Today is a Cancer Full Moon (03.27 GMT) linking in with the ongoing Saturn-Uranus opposition. It’s the first of five SuperMoons in 2009, which means we can expect some turbulent weather and some turbulent emotions. You could experience a tug of war between your duties and responsibilities within the family or work situation and your own inner needs. If you feel trapped by outside circumstances, you might want to reflect on where you’re not taking responsibility for yourself and take the first step to freeing yourself from unnecessary restrictions. It is possible to be responsible and to be free! Set personal boundaries and look after your own needs. Choose new priorities that inspire you and make them the focus of your life.

January 11, 2009 – January 31, 2009: Mercury has been slowing down over the last few days and is now stationing in Aquarius (16.39 GMT) prior to travelling in apparent “backwards” motion for his 3 weeks as trickster. You may experience miscommunications, travel delays and technology problems. Because of Mercury’s backward rhythm, it’s generally not a good time to start completely new projects (one exception would be taking a temporary job), buy new electrical or mechanical equipment or sign new contracts. Concentrate your energies on taking time out to revise and realign your life, winding up any old unfinished business that will leave the way clear for new commitments. If you get a brilliant new idea, write it down and see how it looks after February 8.

Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas and a good New Year!

“Stars usually symbolise guiding forces. Mariners use stars to find their way across uncharted seas. Astrologers use stars to predict future trends and to help human beings match the rhythm of their lives to the revolutions of the planets... Like the planets, we are all held within a specific orbit by a power beyond our control, but within our prescribed boundaries, each of us is destined to shine forth in a way uniquely our own.” (Sallie Nichols)
